Tickets & Traffic Offences

What is the Highway Traffic Act?

The Highway Traffic Act (HTA) regulates the use of motor vehicles on roads and highways in Ontario. The HTA's provisions deal with various aspects of road safety, such as licensing, vehicle registration, traffic rules, enforcement, and penalties.

What are common offences under the Highway Traffic Act?

HTA offences range in severity from minor infractions to charges which can seriously impact one's driving record. HTA charges are tried as Provincial Offences in the Ontario Court of Justice.

Common HTA offences include:

  • Speeding
  • Failure to stop
  • Failure to yield
  • Failure to remain at the scene of a collission
  • Dangerous driving
  • Impaired driving
  • Driving without a license or registration
  • Driving too closely ("follow too close")

What are the penalties for Highway Traffic Act offences?

If you are convicted of an HTA offence, the fine or penalty will vary depending on your driving record, the severity of the offence, and any circumstances specific to your case. In addition to  monetary fines, penalties can include demerit points, driving suspensions, and even jail time.  HTA convictions may negatively affect your insurance rates.

How can a paralegal help fight my traffic ticket?

Paralegals are licensed professionals who can provide representation and advice in Highway Traffic Act matters. A paralegal  help you protect your good driving record, avoid car insurance increases, decrease demerit points penalties, save on ticket fines and even avoid jail time.

If you have been charged with an HTA offence, don't delay Even if you have been offered a plea bargain, you should consider hiring a paralegal to fight the charges or negotiate a better arrangment on your behalf. At David Borrie Paralegal Services, we advocate vigorously to get your charges reduced or drop entirely. Get in touch with us today for a free consultation. .
